The pretty city of Napier on New Zealand’s north island is a place that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time—back to the era of jazz, gin and glorious art deco style. Known as the Art Deco City, Napier is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of inner-city art deco buildings. Every February, Napier honours its heritage and unique style at the Art Deco Weekend Summer Festival, which celebrates the city’s reconstruction after a devastating 1931 earthquake that destroyed most of the buildings. The annual event features 1930s-inspired music, street dances, picnics and other festivities. Napier is also the location of New Zealand’s oldest wineries, and considered to be the home of New Zealand wine.
