This holy river flows through China, India, Nepal and Bangladesh with its source located in the Himalayas. The Ganges river basin is one of the most fertile and densely populated in the world. According to Hindu mythology, Ganges is the holiest of all rivers and is named after the goddess Ganga, daughter of the mountain god, Himalaya. The river is home to many holy pilgrimages every year. It is believed that bathing in the Ganges washes away your sins while the water cleanses you of all evil. Hindus are known to spread the ashes of their dead in the river believing that it will guide their souls straight to paradise. If you do decide to visit, though, think twice before jumping in the river.The Ganges is very polluted and houses such diseases as dysentery, hepatitis and cholera.
