Ayers Rock, also known as Uluru, is a large red sandstone formation in the midst of the dry, barren Australian outback. The name Uluru was given to the rock formation by a local Aboriginal group called the Pitjantjatjara people, and there are many myths and legends surrounding the mystic of Ayers Rock—the most common being that those who take rocks from it are subject to a cursed misfortune. The formation itself consists of watering holes, caves and ancient Aboriginal carvings and paintings, making it a popular tourist attraction and one of Australia’s most famous landmarks.
