Denim & Deep Fry: 5 Wildest Midway Foods at Calgary Stampede
Today marks the 1st day of the 101st Calgary Stampede. The festival, which has been dubbed “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, ” attracts travellers from around the world looking to partake in all things western. Rodeos, chuckwagon races and some of the biggest names in entertainment call Calgary home during the 10-day festival each July.
But it’s not all cowboys and buckin’ broncos. The midway also dazzles with a slew of interesting rides and delicious new foods. And last night, I had the esteemed honour of judging the Best “New” Foods debuting at the Calgary Stampede this year.
With a tummy full of deep fry, here are my five favourite picks!
Double Bacon Corn Dog from E.N. Campbell Concessions
Not your average pup! This hotdog has been wrapped in bacon, deep fried, battered, deep fried again and served up with a healthy portion of more deep-fried bacon and maple syrup for dipping.
Banana Bacon Ear from First Class Concessions
Like a giant pie on a stick, this dough has been stuffed full of bananas and bacon bits, tossed in the fryer and dressed with powdered sugar and chocolate sauce. This desert puts the classic elephant ear to shame.
Deep Fried Butter from One Sweet World
Frozen balls of butter are wrapped like a wonton in pie dough before they take a swim through hot oil. One bite and warm butter will be dripping down your face—not to mention the 200 calories per ball that will be hitting your waist line.
Deep-Fried Bubble Gum from Pennsylvania Dutch Funnel Cakes
Served in an ice cream cone, the pink “bubblegum” is actually marshmallows dipped in a bubblegum-flavoured batter and deep fried to warm and chewy perfection. Let’s see if you can blow a bubble.
Movie-Themed Mac & Cheese from REEL Mac & Cheese Food Truck
Imagine your favourite Hollywood blockbuster re-imagined into an eight-blend cheesy masterpiece.
The ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is blended with curry and peas, and topped with crispy onions—an edible Bollywood in a bowl.
With all the delicious and outrageous new foods hitting the midway at this year’s Calgary Stampede, I’m glad I packed my stretchy pants!
