One of Marineland’s former employees, Phil Demers, has launched an online petition in response to the recent allegations by the Toronto Star newspaper that many of the theme park’s animals are suffering from abuse and neglect.

“I saw dolphins living in extremely poor quality water, their skin flaking off in chunks, and six out of seven harbour seals becoming blind or suffering severe eye damage,” he writes in the petition’s introduction. “A baby beluga named ‘Skoot’ died last month after being attacked by other belugas in a pool she should have never been forced into.”

Demers’ petition calls on the Ontario government to implement a law regulating aquariums or zoos. The province currently has no such legislation in place.

The petition is available at change.org/petitions/save-marineland-s-animals.
