This Weekend: Watch the Tightrope Walk of the Century across Niagara Falls by NIK WALLENDA!

Scared of heights? Nik Wallenda certainly isn’t. The daredevil — and descendent of the famed acrobatic Wallenda family — is set to tightrope walk across Niagara Falls this weekend in a feat that hasn’t been attempted in more than a century.

Balancing 60 metres in the air, Wallenda will cross a 550-metre steel cable, suspended over the thunderous roar of the Horseshoe Falls. Wallenda estimates his walk will take him 40 minutes to complete.

To further add to the drama, his stunt will be done at night, starting at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, and Wallenda will be forced to work his way through the fog-like mist the falls produce, which can sometimes be so thick as to allow for only a few feet of visibility.

Attempts to cross the falls are strictly forbidden, and carry a fine of up to $10,000. But Wallenda was granted an exception, thanks to his long family lineage of world-renowned acrobats.

The last time anyone attempted to cross the falls by highwire was in 1896, when James Hardy—also the youngest person ever to perform the stunt—crossed the gorge. However, unlike with the daredevils of the past, Wallenda will be secured with a safety harness.

The stunt is expected to draw 120,000 visitors to Niagara Falls, and local police are erecting security fencing and closing some nearby highways in an attempt to ensure proper crowd control.
